Seafreight Space ex Europe / UK / Mediterranean

Feb 19

There is a major shortage of space on container ships leaving Europe / UK / Med ports, then for us in New Zealand at the transhipment ports of Singapore / Cartagena.

The shortage of space on vessels exiting Europe (mainly for Asia) is unexpected and the reasons not completely clear. Whole shipping "strings" being withdrawn over the last 12 months is thought to be largely responsible and many vessels being used are of a smaller size.

The shortage of space on the 2nd leg through to New Zealand is due to less services carrying increased volumes - especially the usual pre Chinese New Year increased volume - meaning there is less space available to carry the Europe origin containers.

Delays of at least 1 week are the norm meaning average transit times of 46 - 50 days from most Europe ports. In the short term this is not expected to change in the near future.

We will keep you advised.
