Christchurch temporarily closed due Earthquake

Sep 05

On Saturday morning at 0430 hours Christchurch and surrounding areas were hit by a  magnitude 7.4 earthquake. Aftershocks continue and will do so for some days to come.

There were no fatalaties and the Mondiale Christchurch team and their families are all ok.

The office is operational, however all commercial buildings are temporarily closed for safety purposes until they have been inspected and certified as safe.

As a consequence. Mondiale Christchurch will be closed Monday 6 September.

We hope to be open on Tuesday 7th, but this depends on confirmation of site safety.

  • The port and airports are both open, although services may be affected.
  • More than 500 buildings in the city are confirmed damaged - almost 100 of those in the central city area.
  • Some parts of the city sustained severe damage, many businesses will be closed for much of the week.
  • Damage to roads, water, sewerage will affect access and service to other affected areas.
  • Power has been restored to 90% of Christchurch.  Power can not be restored in the central city until all buildings are checked.
  • While there has been damage to some minor bridges, major bridges have withstood the quake.  Some roads have been closed due to liquefaction or flooding
  • There are also parts of the city relatively un-affected, and normal service may return to these areas very soon.
  • Bad weather is predicted for the area, and there is the potential for this to further disrupt the recovery, however flooding is considered unlikely.

Please contact the Auckland office for any urgent enquiries relating to Christchurch.

We will update further Monday afternoon.
