Christchurch - Closure of Evans Pass-Sumner Road

Sep 09

The Christchurch City Council have had to close Sumner Rd due to rock falls.

Blasting to remoce hazards is planned for Sat 11 September.

The council has advised it is going take approx 2 weeks to clear the rock fall & debris on these roads after blasting.

These roads are the only alternate route (to the tunnel) from Lyttelton port, primarily used for DG containers or over height cargo that can't go through the Lyttelton tunnel.

We are talking to carriers & NZTA to see what options are available for getting DG containers from the port during this time.

Lyttelton port is still operational, although they have estimated there is around $50 million worth of damage sustained so far.

As a guideline, any after shocks over 5.4 magnitude, Lyttelton port will stop operations for routine safety checks.

As events unfold we will continue to update.
