Import USA to NZ (East Coast/US Gulf) – Possible Pending Strike Action

Sep 20

Further to our advice on our September schedule regarding contract talks between the ILA and USMX and the fact it  leaves some doubt that a new contract will be in place by September 30th. Mondiale/Brennan is still optimistic that the two sides will be able to meet an agreement in time to prevent any disruption. However if a strike or lock out does occur, Brennan/Mondiale has established an Intermodal Network to ship LCL cargo via the West Coast. All cargo that would ordinarily move via the East Coast will move out to Los Angeles. We are required to announce  that effective 1st October 2012 an Emergency Strike Surcharge of USD 45 per w/m will apply for getting the cargo to the West Coast.

The above surcharge will only apply to bookings where the controlling party has requested and/or agreed to be loaded via the West Coast. While we optimistically expect these actions will be unnecessary, we do have a responsibility to you our valued customers to have a plan in place for a worse case situation while still hoping for the best. We will keep updated as more information comes to hand.

FCL : On all USA trades import/export as precautionary measure shipping lines have filed Port Congestion Surcharges to be assessed on all FCL shipments loading or discharging in US ports during any period of labour unrest, including but not limited to a strike, lockout, work stoppage or slow down.  There is no certainty as to whether there will be any labour disruption and if there is no labour disruption the port congestion surcharge that the lines have announced will not be implemented.

The Port Congestion Surcharges can vary from shipping line to shipping line but the figures seem to be in the following region and will be applied at cost on top of normal rates for both import/export ; USD 800 per 20ft / USD 1000 per 40ft GP / USD 1125 per 40ft HC.
