Industrial Action at Hong Kong Container Terminal

Strike action at Hong Kong`s largest container terminal,HIT, has entered its second week.

To date, this strike action has had very little effect in terms of delays on the Hong Kong to New Zealand trade route.

Most carriers have been able to get alternative slots at the competing MTL and DWP  terminals ,or make up the time in their schedule, following the delays in operating through Hong Kong.

However, the situation is worsening and many carriers are now looking at diverting vessels away from Hong Kong,so they can keep to their weekly berthing windows at other global ports of call.

In addition, many feeder vessels operating from the Pearl River Delta and surrounding areas close to Hong Kong, are experiencing delays due to the ongoing nature of the strike and the resulting pressure that is occurring at the alternate terminals.

The latter is the greatest concern at this stage in terms of the NZ trade.

Mondiale is monitoring the situation closely and will advise if this ongoing strike will delay any of your cargo.

Please contact your Mondiale representative if you have specific queries or concerns.
