Extension of Mandatory Treatment of Italian shipments for the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB)

Mar 05

Over the last 2 months you will have seen a number of Advice Notices from us concerning the mandatory fumigation of all sea imports from Italy, to fight against the introduction of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in to New Zealand. The Ministry For Primary Industry (MPI) is responsible for organising this program.

The initial general restrictions were to apply to all goods imported by sea from Italy that arrived in New Zealand from 23rd December last up until 1st March 2018, however for a number of reasons MPI has advised this mandatory treatment period is now being extended to goods arriving from Italy up until 30th April. Please see full explanation below.

We have today requested our Italian agents to immediately begin arranging fumigation of ALL containers – both straight FCL as well as our LCL containers – prior to shipment. This is MPI’s strong preference (to have at risk containers fumigated at origin rather than here in NZ) and it will avoid congestion and probable Demurrage charges at the NZ Port of arrival. There are of course a number of containers on the water now that have not been fumigated in Italy prior to departure including our LCL containers. These will now have to be fumigated upon arrival. We will unfortunately have to continue to pass the cost of doing this on to all importers. As before this will be ;

FCL
If pre-fumigated   Eur 340.00 per container (20ft or 40ft)
If NZ fumigated    NZ$ 520.00 per 20ft / NZ$ 660.00 per 40ft approx

LCL
If pre-fumigated   NZ$ 15.00 per m3
If NZ fumigated    NZ$ 20.00 per m3
